Paradise lost →
ScienceDaily (2010-10-30) — Researchers in Israel have uncovered an ancient royal garden at the site of Ramat Rachel near Jerusalem, and are leading the first full-scale excavation of this type of archaeological site anywhere in the pre-Hellenistic Levant. The dig is an unparalleled look into the structure and function of ancient gardens.

commonunity: wtf.  “A lot of people have the wrong impression about what an antifeminist really is,” said Andersson. “They believe that an antifeminist is a woman-hater. Not at all. An antifeminist is a kind of peacekeeper who wants to return things to normal. As an antifeminist I believe in true equality between a man and a woman.” posted on swissinfo.ch

Every time I tell someone I am a feminist, they immediately look at me and say, “Well, you don’t look like one. You’re a good-looking girl.” All I’m thinking is why the hell does that matter? A feminist is simply a person who disagrees with the way the power structures construct gender. Being pretty doesn’t disqualify you. Being male doesn’t either.

Our Deepest Fear
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other...

ScienceDaily (2010-10-26) — The theory that later Neanderthals might have been sufficiently advanced to fashion jewelery and tools similar to those of incoming modern humans has suffered a setback. A new radiocarbon dating study has found that an archaeological site that uniquely links Neanderthal remains to sophisticated tools and jewelery may be partially mixed.

In all my 4 years
I want to graduate in December, but gosh, not to sound conceded or anything, people really need me here. Professors are one step from begging me to stay. Managers desperately need my input. Students need a friend. In all my 4 years, I have never received this kind of feedback and my last semester, they overwhelm me with it.  Strange. As soon as you feel wanted and needed, its time to go. Sort of...

This is my rant for the week
Tomorrow is the test day for the Introduction to Anthropology class that I am a TA in. The last test they did a horrible job on, the average was a D. So hopefully this time they got their act together, studied, read the fricking book, and do well. I, however, have a slight problem with the professor. All he does is sit high and mighty in his office chair and makes me do all the work. The tests,...

Let the Nerd in me Rejoice!
Every time I do these review sessions, I am elevated. Watching freshmen (who I hate 90% of the time) understand anthropology and apply it is amazing to watch. It is one of the reasons why I have decided…drum roll please…that I want to be an anthropology professor.  An adjunct is perfectly fine with me. Teaching a few classes to draw people in to one of the awesomest (I know thats not...

jbesonia: Let’s forget number 10. justbesplendid: You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it’s yours to keep for the entire period. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called, “life.” There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial, error, and experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as...

Me (email): I am holding a study session in the library from 4-6 in room 152.
Student: Where is room 152?
Another student: Can I bring my book and my study guide? I will help me get ready for it.
Me (thinking): DUH!! Do you learn anything in high school? What did you do to get into college? Fuck the dean?
Me (email): All questions in reference to where and what time the study session is in the email. Bring whatever materials you think will assist you.
